This Week at TIP: November 30, 2009

We will have another very busy week preparing for the Winter Performance and are looking forward to performing on Thursday. We will not have a lot of time to work on an artist of the week but will continue using dot art, looking at some of Seurat’s work and make use of our knowledge on combining primary colours.

In language arts we will be concentrating on the letter Yy and the older students will begin to focus more on writing words and sentences.

In Maths we will continue to look at shapes as well as focusing on position and directions.

This Week at TIP: November 23, 2009

We have a short and busy week planned at TIP this week. We will meet Noisy Nick in Language Arts and continue to develop our phonetic awareness and writing skills with journal writing. In Maths we will move towards 3D shapes.

This week we will also focus on Australian Aboriginal Art. Aboriginals were the first known inhabitants of Australia and used resources from the environment to draw symbols, usually on rocks or tree bark. They were often in dot form. These symbols tell stories that have been passed on from one generation to the next.

The Winter Performance is also just around the corner, so we will be spending a lot of time practicing our song “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer”.

This Week at TIS: November 16, 2009

We had a great start to our new unit of study last week as we learned about Eric Carle’s collage techniques. This week’s focus artist will be Pablo Picasso, a Spanish artist who simplified the things he was painting into simple shapes. This will also complement our continued work on shapes in maths this week. Picasso also went through a happy stage where he painted things red, and a sad stage when he painted things blue. We will experiment with each of these in our own art creations.

This week in language arts we will continue with our letter and phonics routines, focusing on the letter “Pp”.

Thursday
In language arts we will write in our journal. In the afternoon we will talk about Picasso’s blue stage and what things make us sad. We will then try our own ‘blue’ pictures.

Friday
Today we review our Pp writing and vocabulary and paint a picture of something that makes us happy as Picasso did during his ‘rose’ stage.

This Week at TIP: November 9, 2009

This week at TIP we will by starting a new unit of work titled “Let’s Do Art!”. We will talk about why people create art and the processes of art (rather than product). Each week we will also focus on a different artist and will have the opportunity to experiment with different artistic techniques.

Our first famous artist study will be Eric Carle, the author and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We will read several of his books, talk about how he creates his pictures, and try it out ourselves. Colours, numbers, sequencing, time, days of the week, shapes and science concepts will also be explored through his books.
