This Week at TIS: November 16, 2009

We had a great start to our new unit of study last week as we learned about Eric Carle’s collage techniques. This week’s focus artist will be Pablo Picasso, a Spanish artist who simplified the things he was painting into simple shapes. This will also complement our continued work on shapes in maths this week. Picasso also went through a happy stage where he painted things red, and a sad stage when he painted things blue. We will experiment with each of these in our own art creations.

This week in language arts we will continue with our letter and phonics routines, focusing on the letter “Pp”.

Monday
Today we will be introduced to Picasso and make a mini book about him. We will also talk about the winter performance.

Tuesday
This morning we will work in small groups for Pp (language arts) and shape (maths) activities. In the afternoon we will review the primary colours and once again mix them to make different shades of colours.

Wednesday
For our Picasso studies today we will look at some of his portraits and try our own self-portrait in the Picasso style.

Thursday
In language arts we will write in our journal. In the afternoon we will talk about Picasso’s blue stage and what things make us sad. We will then try our own ‘blue’ pictures.

Friday
Today we review our Pp writing and vocabulary and paint a picture of something that makes us happy as Picasso did during his ‘rose’ stage.
